The Ultimate Enterprise Cloud Migration Guide
Cloud migration is no longer a question of 'if' but 'how fast' for enterprises in the Middle East. With regulatory frameworks maturing and hyper-scaler data centers now operating in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the conditions for successful migration have never been better, but the risks haven't gone away.
1. Start with a Cloud Readiness Assessment
Before moving a single workload, conduct a full inventory of your application portfolio. Classify each application: retire, retain, re-host (lift-and-shift), re-platform, refactor, or replace. Most organizations move too fast on lift-and-shift without understanding which applications will actually benefit from cloud economics.
2. Address Data Residency Early
MENA-specific regulations, NCA in Saudi Arabia, UAE IA regulations, and PDPL, impose strict requirements on where certain data can reside and how it must be encrypted. Map your data categories to regulatory requirements before choosing your cloud regions and architecture patterns.
3. Build for Multi-Cloud from Day One
Vendor lock-in is a real risk. Architect your workloads with portability in mind, use Kubernetes for containerized workloads, infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), and cloud-agnostic data formats. This is not about using multiple clouds simultaneously, it's about not being trapped.
4. Migrate in Waves, Not Big Bangs
Group applications into migration waves by complexity and dependency. Start with stateless, low-dependency workloads in Wave 1. Use these early migrations to build team confidence and refine your runbook before tackling mission-critical applications.
5. Establish Cloud Governance Before You Scale
Landing zones, account structures, IAM policies, cost tagging standards, and security baselines must be in place before Wave 1 goes live. Organizations that skip governance spend 6–18 months cleaning up sprawl and overspend after the fact.
